Newcastle upon Tyne is one of the largest towns in the north east of England and is considered by many to be the unofficial capital of the north. Newcastle is close to the Scotland-England border, making it an ideal base for exploring Hadrian's Wall, the surrounding region of Northumberland, and the thriving city of Sunderland. Durham, famous for it's Cathedral, is also within close proximity to Newcastle and is easily reached by car. Newcastle itself has many things to keep holidaymakers busy - the Tyne Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge are popular, as are the ruins of Segedunum and the Castle Keep. A short drive away in Gateshead is the famous Antony Gormley sculpture 'The Angel of the North'.

Newcastle is serviced by the Newcastle International Airport, located approximately ten kilometres to the north east of the city centre on the A696. The airport has two runways and a single multi-level terminal, though there are plans afoot to expand this increasingly busy complex. British Airways, Easy Jet, FlyBe, Jet2.com and Ryan Air are amongst the airlines which offer flights to and from the airport, with routes to Europe, the Middle East and the United States all covered. In the peak season BMI, Monarch, Thomas Cook, XL Airways and Thomson Fly also fly routes from the terminal. Car hire is recommended for exploring the surrounding area and there are a number of car rental companies based at the airport. National, Hertz, Avis and Europcar all have desks on the ground floor of the terminal immediately opposite the arrivals gate.
